TIVO Series 1 Upgrade

I installed a 2nd hard drive in a tivo series 1.  I went with the quickie method were I basically just formatted the drive and plugged it in.

The tivo recognized the drive and it says under system settings that I now have 49 hours at the highest quality.

But when I record I only end up with some where around 15 hours, so it isn’t using the 2nd drive even thought the tivo recognizes it.

I just found out that the instructions to add a hard drive have been updated at of October 3rd, 2006.

Now it looks like you can make a backup image of your tivo hard drive, then copy that image to a new larger drive and also add space to it. Something that was not possible to do before.

It looks like I am going to have to fix the tivo I upgraded since it is not finding the additional drive.

I like the idea of just adding one larger drive since this tivo will be in my bedroom and one drive is only half as likely to make noise as two drives are.

Tivo Series 1 Notes:

- On low quality I think you get around 1 hour for each GB of hard disk space.

- Tivo series 1 is limited to accessing the first 137GB of a hard drive, you can install 2 drives to boost it to around 256GB.

The original Series 1 models have ATA and TiVo kernel confinements that limit using at most 137GB (128GiB) of any drives installed. Larger drives will function but you are currently limited to a maximum of 2 drives x 137GB (128GiB) or 274GB (256GiB) of addressable space in Series 1 models.
