Tivo Diskdrive Upgrade notes

1. The first upgrade I did I purchased a disk drive that was already installed for Tivo and I just put it in the tivo and it was easy and worked fine.  I had to buy the disk drive because at the time I only had 1 tivo and you can’t install a drive without a disk image for your tivo, so if you only have one tivo and the hard drive goes out your screwed.

2. The 2nd upgrade went really smooth, when I purchased the disk drive they also sent me a cd with all the software on it. I just followed the instructions and added a drive with almost no trouble.

3. the third time I tried an upgrade I think I was overconfident and something may have gone wrong. The Tivo was showing 49 hours in the system setup but it would only record around 15 hours.  I tried using a floppy to boot to unix but there may have been something with my computer that just didn’t want to work with unix on a floppy.  I ended up booting from the CD I got with my first drive and it worked fine.

4. if you’re adding a 2nd drive you need a place to mount it, I got an old drive that was broken and taped it into the tivo with duct tape, then I duct taped my good drive on top of the broken one and used it as a mount. It worked fine.

5. you need some unix command to make check the drive like “ls” to get a directory and “shift”  “page up” to go back up and see what the names of your hard drives were when unix installed itself.
